Meet Dr Catherine King, The Wellness Medic

Meet Dr Catherine King, The Wellness Medic

Catherine King is an Emergency Medicine Doctor in the NHS, here she sees the toll that working long hours in stressful conditions causes.  Many of her colleagues and friends suffer from burnout, exhaustion and stress.

It seemed ironic to her that the biggest cause of staff shortages in the NHS was the number of days off sick due to stress. This in turn has lead to many medics and healthcare professionals becoming disillusioned by their profession.

The sad truth is that many healthcare professionals are so busy looking after the public that they neglect their own health.  To help address the issue Catherine has started a revolution by creating a platform for discussion/ help and to organise wellness weeks and retreats specifically designed for healthcare workers.

How 5 minutes 'you time' each day can change your life

How 5 minutes 'you time' each day can change your life

I started again around 6 weeks ago and decided to try meditating first thing in the morning instead of trying to fit it in after dinner.

For a long time, I thought that I was useless at sports.

In fact, I avoided physical activity at any cost. After years of gruelling hockey lessons stood in the freezing cold in a teeny tiny P.E skirt with blue legs and freezing hands to match, I developed a hatred of exercise.

Can stress actually be good for us?

We all live under continual stress and the effects can be very harmful for our well being but has it always been the case?

Stress is a normal reaction to life events such as falling in love or starting a new job.  The stress response is hardwired into our body to keep us safe and is part of our natural desire to stay protected.

When we are stressed our sympathetic nervous system (SNS) triggers the ‘flight or response’ system which puts us into ‘fight or flight' mode.
